Rape and sexual assault are growing problems in Kenya. In 2009 alone, there were 40,000 reported cases, and the majority of cases still go unreported. In order to protect themselves a group of women have decided to get together every week to learn self-defence and karate-style movement.
The class takes place in a slum in Nairobi, where elderly women especially are at high risk of rape because of a misconception that older women don’t have HIV.
About 20 women attend the class each week and the oldest woman in the group is 85. A video released by AJ+ shows these badass ladies in action.
“He touched my neck, and then I boxed him. And another one and another one,” recalls Jane, a 55-year-old woman who fought off an attacker.
