Since 2007 there has been a 32% increase in diagnosed mental health conditions in adults with a massive 92% of college students feeling mentally distressed. The near epidemic levels of stressed out young adults is well documented. But it isn’t just young people who are feeling the strain of modern life, as 25% of people view their jobs as the number one source of stress in their lives. Given that our careers will likely take up a large part of our lives it makes sense that we should learn how to deal with the stress of the workplace.
Meditation and relaxation techniques are becoming commonplace amongst some of the world’s top CEOs and with good reason: CEO Ray Dalio has said he uses meditation to check his ego; Steve Rubin attributes his “laser like focus” to the practice. The reason CEOs and many workers are turning to meditation is that it is a practice that involves relaxing the mind in order to regain control of it.
A clear mind helps us to be more disciplined in the pursuit of our goals, broadens our perspective, and helps us stay positive.
Meditation keeps you disciplined
A trained mind can be the best asset at your disposal to deal with the world around you and accomplish things you never thought possible. Many things in our lives are outside our control but through hard work and meditation we can learn to control our minds and make sure they’re up to the challenges we might face day-to-day in our lives.
Meditation can be really beneficial in learning how to stay focused and resilient, especially in an office work type situation where you are trying to balance your work and life at the same time. Research has shown that mindfulness meditation can boost long-term mental health.
Meditation helps you stay positive
It’s easy to stay positive when our careers are on a roll, but to be able to find happiness within, even during times of turbulence, is something else again.
With a cool, calm mind, you’ll be better able to appreciate life’s simple pleasures because you are unconcerned by thoughts of when the moment will end or whether or not you will have a similar experience again. While our circumstances are finite, our positivity is something that can be endlessly harnessed.
It’s all part of creating what is known as an abundance mindset. When your happiness comes from inside, and you have an infinite well of positivity that you can tap into at any time, the way that you run your business is markedly different.
Meditation and learning to relax is important regardless of what job you have. Meditation isn’t the only way to unwind however; some people find physical exercise works for them, even taking time for a spa break can be equally rewarding. All you need to meditate though is five minutes in a quiet place, and ultimately your mind and your work will benefit from it.
