There are so many reasons why a person may want to broaden their mind. In fact, it’s harder to think of a reason why not to try and open your mind to explore new things and constantly learn and develop. It can be hard to try and tap into your brain to open up to all of the new possibilities that are out there, and hard to change your mindset and the way you think. You can’t just wake up one day with a different mindset, it’s going to take practice to become a way of life. Fortunately, writing is a great way to really open up, and let new possibilities enter your mind.
1. Use Mental Photographs to Heighten Senses
We all take photos to remember things, but putting pen to paper can help to remind you of the day in even more detail. Plus, you can use your memories, including the sights, sounds, and smells that were occurring during that time, and become more aware of your surroundings on a day to day basis. If you’re struggling with vocabulary, you can use the Hemingway App for inspiration, or Pro Writing Aid for a thesaurus or style tips.
2. Use Your Imagination
When you imagine an entirely new story or create a new world, you’ll suddenly find yourself more aware of the world you actually live in. Writing new characters will help you be more open minded about the people you meet outside of your normal circle. You can establish your targets for your word count and monitor them with Easy Word Count.
3. Create a Historic Journal
To get better at listening and communicating, as well as remembering certain things, you can write a journal of events that happened long ago. You’ll be surprised by the details you can remember, and become more aware of people’s feelings as a result. If you’re worried your memories are patchy and affecting your writing, you can look for writing guides and advice at Boomessays or Paper fellows blogs.
4. Isolate Your Senses
Try to just sit and listen for a while, and then describe the sounds you hear and create a story about them. If you need help to work on your creative writing, you can try using some online tools. Focusing on each sense individually, and then altogether, will help you to become more aware of the world around you, and of yourself.
5. Challenge Yourself with New Classes
One of the best ways to open your mind is through education, so you can take an online writing class, or any other class that involves writing or thinking. You can sort out the minutiae of academic writing using tools like Cite It In. Plus, you can check that your writing is improving by monitoring your level of writing with Readability Score. Taking an academic writing class is still beneficial to creative writers, as simply being around new people and in a new environment will open up new ideas.
6. Share a Story Chain with Friends
If you want to open your mind through writing, then you’ll need to leave your comfort zone, and not just write about familiar subjects. This is simple to do by writing a paragraph of a story, then sending it to a friend, and continuing each other’s work. If you don’t know anyone who would be interested in this, there are plenty of writers in forums who would be happy to provide a prompt.
7. Pretend to Be an Alien
We can all start to take the world around us for granted, however we don’t realise how our world looks to those on the outside. Take a deep long look at the world around you and become more aware by writing about your daily life as if you were an alien. Get out of your own head and see what things blossom.
There are many ways to open your mind but writing is one of the most effective and easiest things to implement into your daily routine.
