Deep in the Alaskan Wilderness, nestled among the trees sits Goose Creek Tower. If you keep your eye to the sky, you definitely can’t miss it, as the architectural wonder towers above the treetops and looks as if it was taken out of a Dr. Seuss book.
According to Unusual Places, the original owner, Phil Weidner, wanted to get the best view possible of Denali, also known as Mt. McKinley, America’s tallest mountain. He had built the cabin right after a forest fire when surrounding trees were small. As the trees grew taller, the owner would add another level, until eventually, after 10 years of building, the towering stack of cabins reached 185 ft. tall.
The building sat abandoned for another decade before the owner decided to start working on it again. According to Alaska.org, Weidner has plans to put a telescope at the top of the tower, with its perfect 360-degree views of the surrounding scenery. He also wants to put in a ham radio station and broadcast, “Radio Free Goose Creek.”
The unique tower is located in the Mat-Su Valley, between Willow and Talkeetna. Unfortunately you cannot visit the tower at this time, but you can get great views of it while taking the train from Anchorage to Denali. Weidner eventually plans to live in the bottom level of the tower and will open it up to the public once it is completed.
