How do you react when a stranger calls you beautiful? Do you kindly and humbly thank them for the compliment, or do you laugh, because you think they must be joking. Maybe you blush and shy away out of embarrassment.
In general, people have trouble accepting compliments. Maybe it’s because we’re not used to receiving them, or maybe it’s because of our own insecurities that we don’t believe them.
Shea Glover, a high school student from Chicago, conducted a social experiment revolving around compliments, and the diverse reactions to them.
She placed people, many of them strangers, in front of her camera and then simply stated, “I’m taking pictures of things I find beautiful.”
According to her YouTube video, Glover’s intentions were not to get a reaction out of people, but rather just to see how they would naturally respond. “I was simply filming beauty and this is the result,” she said.
The reactions range from denial, to fits of laughter, and embarrassment, but a common thread among all is the way the subjects’ eyes light up when they are told something positive.
Genuine happiness is beautiful and the smiles that form across their faces are proof of that.
