Under the canopy of night, beneath the smeared light of the Milky Way and facing the red mountains of the south, a silver van sits alone in the vast desert landscape. The inside of the van has been customized into a small kingdom of propane-generated stovetops, fold-out dining room utilities and a queen-sized mattress in the back. The owners of the van lay under the stars and think to themselves how lucky they are to live in their rolling paradise of simple pleasures and constant exploration—and better yet, how they didn’t have to lift a single finger to make it all possible.
A California company, Townsend Travel Trailers (TTT), is offering this lifestyle as a package deal for lazy nomads with the missing DIY gene. From consultation to appraisals, acquisition, design, architecture and construction, TTT will literally find a trailer or van for you, renovate it according to your specifications and deliver it right to you. The company specializes in Airstream trailers and Sprinter vans specifically, which offer room-y and customizable interiors.

The company is owned by 28-year-old Thomas Townsend, and operates out of Santa Barbara, California. But as he notes on their website, “don’t let our location deter you from having your own custom trailer made. Because like our trailers, we too, can travel and deliver to you.”
The renovations take three months to complete, and everything is customizable. Townsend works closely with clients to develop a floor plan for the mobile space, catering to their unique needs and desires. And though they specialize in Airstream and Sprinters, TTT is open to renovating just about any trailer, truck, van or bus.

As you may have expected, their services don’t come cheap—though it’s all relative. The finished products are designed to be permanent living spaces, which are perfectly capable of housing a small family. So even though TTT charges $35,000 for classic models and $65,000 for premium models, the value is in quality, livability, and the piece of mind that your trailer or van is crafted to last.
The interiors—complete with modern showers, kitchens and bedrooms—are nicer than the average apartment and therefore serve the dual purpose of mobile and stationary home life. The difference is, with the right trailer or van, your stationary home exists wherever you decide to park it.
