Whether you’re a Democrat, Republican or Independent, threatening to leave the country when democracy doesn’t quite match your personal preference has become something of a tradition in America.
In 2000, several celebrities, including Eddie Vedder and the entire Baldwin family, as well as other Democrats, threatened to move to Canada or Europe if George W. Bush beat Al Gore. Four years later, the voters renewed their promise if Dubya was re-elected.
Under the Obama Administration, Republicans had their turn threatening to leave if the Affordable Care Act was passed. Many promised to move to Canada, where socialized medicine had been the norm for generations.
This time around, Democrats are considering the move at the thought of being forced to have to say the words President Trump. On the night of the billionaire entertainer’s Super Tuesday win, Google’s data editor Simon Rogers tweeted that there had been a 350 percent spike in searches for, “how can I move to Canada?”
The threat has become so common on the trail that Donald may want to consider walling the whole country off.

“My wife and I have been doing this type of thing since ’72—the McGovern campaign,” a Bernie supporter at a Dearborn Michigan rally said before making a statement that’s quickly becoming the slogan of the anti-Trump movement, “If Trump wins, I’ll probably move to Canada.”
Living up to its reputation, the ‘True North,’ is welcoming Trump’s refugees with open arms.
In a recent town hall meeting with the Huffington Post, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that if “people do want to make choices that perhaps suit their lifestyles better, Canada is always welcoming and opening.”
One place in particular is recruiting runaways. In Cape Breton Nova Scotia, local DJ Rob Calabrese created a website called Cape Breton If Donald Trump Wins. The site, initially created as a joke, has experienced some heavy traffic in the past few weeks giving the island some badly needed advertising.
“[W]e are experiencing a bit of a population problem at the moment. We need people. We need you!” Rob says in his invitation to Americans.

Cape Breton is expected to lose more than 40 percent of its population by 2031. The island is having a difficult time convincing young Canadians, aged 20 to 39, to stay, leaving behind an aging population that could use a boost from, say, Bernie Sanders’ young supporters.
“How much would it cost for a three bedroom lakeside home in your state? About a jillion dollars?” The website asks, “You would need to BE Donald Trump to afford a place like that. But in Cape Breton, we have the most affordable housing market in North America!”
The site also features testimonials from Americans, and others around the world who made the move.
“The people are warm and generous and embrace diversity. Having the security of a public health system takes away some of the stresses of everyday life,” says Lisa from Maine.
But when it comes down to it, Cape Bretoners aren’t picky, they just need people!
“[T]he truth is, we welcome all, no matter who you support, be it Democrat, Republican or Donald Trump. I hope you will stay and learn more about our island”.
