Most artists are starving, some are bleeding. Marc Quinn is of the latter.
Every five years, the British artist creates a frozen solid bust of his own head created purely from his own blood. It takes 10 pints of the life giving liquid to produce one head, which is then immersed in frozen silicone. Five heads have been created since 1991 and what they reveal is the reality of time and the aging process. Quinn’s unsettling sculptures remind us that we are just flesh and blood, and that our bodies are just temporary vessels. Even the sculptures themselves are temporary, relying on a cooling system to keep them frozen.
