Tens of thousands of participants gather about 120 miles from Reno Nevada, in the Black Rock Dessert, to marvel at hundreds of extraordinary creations that have risen from the dust. This August marks the 30th anniversary of Burning Man, a world stage for some extremely talented emerging artists, in what is quite possibly the most surreal setting to showcase this kind of supernatural creativity.
Art has become the main feature of the festival, as Burning Man celebrates expression, self-reliance, life and all of the incredible things humans are capable of creating. The energetic space boasts interactive performance pieces, sculptures and installations. The installations are inspired by the theme chosen each year by the organizers. Each work is more impressive than the last and could have very well been made in someone’s backyard. However, the most astonishing works are those that appear larger-than-life, only to be burned to the ground nearing the end of the festival.
If a week in the desert doesn’t top your bucket list, allow this gallery to change your mind. Check out twelve of the most inspiring creations to ever grace the playa.
