Introduction
Texas is also known as “The Lone Star State” as it is the largest state by size in the continental United States, but only the second-largest (after Alaska) of all the U.S. states. It also has the second-largest population, after California. Texas has three of the U.S.’s most populated cities. There is so much to do and see in Texas, and because the state is so big, you can take an exciting road trip in this one state alone. Here are some of the best places and best things to do in the state of Texas.
El Paso
Franklin Mountains State Park
Visit this spectacular state park if you’re in the mood for hiking. With more than 100 hiking trails, you can enjoy activities such as camping, rock climbing, biking, and so much more. Past visitors to the state park have stated that the best time to visit is near sunset for the most stunning views. When driving through the park, make sure you have all of your road trip essentials.
The El Paso Mission Trail
For those who want a more educational and historic experience, visit the El Paso Mission Trail. The trail is right at the U.S.-Mexico border and goes on for about 9 miles, passing by two churches. There’s also a museum not too far from the trail where you can learn about the Tigua Indian Tribe.
San Antonio
The Alamo
One of San Antonio’s most famous landmarks, the Alamo is full of Texan history. The once Franciscan mission now stands as a tribute to the 189 Texans who lost their lives in a battle that was one of the major turning points in the Texas Revolution.
SeaWorld
Whether you’re traveling with kids or other adults, it’s worth it to visit SeaWorld San Antonio. Here you’ll find both water activities and rides, as well as traditional, dry rides. You can also get up close and personal with many different aquatic animals, from dolphins to penguins. This SeaWorld park may be a little more expensive than others, but it offers so much more and it’s really worth the price.
Houston
The Galleria
For the shopping experience of a lifetime, the Galleria in Houston should definitely be on your bucket list. With more than 400 stores spread across over 2.3 million square feet, this mall offers both affordable stores and expensive boutiques. There’s also plenty of dining options. Because this mall is huge, keep in mind that you will most likely be doing a lot of walking.
Space Center Houston
This is one of the most popular space centers for not only tourists, but also research and training. Here you’ll be able to see space shows, artifacts, tours, and tons of displays and exhibits. The Space Center Houston is definitely a must-see for families traveling to Houston.
Austin
Texas State Capitol
Located rightfully so in the capital of Texas is the state’s capitol building, which is much taller than the U.S. Capitol building. This is another great place to visit if you want to learn about the history of Texas. Bear in mind that it may be crowded at times, mainly because it’s one of the most impressive capitol buildings in the U.S.
Zilker Metropolitan Park
If you want to do it all, then this park is the best place to start. Here at this 351-acre park, you can enjoy water sports such as swimming and canoeing, but there’s also art museums and science centers to enjoy.
Dallas-Fort Worth
Dallas and Fort Worth are known as “twin cities” because of their proximity to one another. As one of the largest metroplexes in the world, there’s an endless amount of fun things to see and do in the DFW area. So much so that it’s worth you and a large group of friends to spend a few days in the Metroplex, and rent a charter bus to help you navigate around and between the two cities. Visit parks, museums, the Dallas Aquarium, and the Fort Worth Zoo.
There’s so much to see and do in the entire state of Texas that it’s not possible to do it all in one day. It’s such a diverse state that has a different experience in each of its major cities.
