In France there is a project called the Suburban Shelters ( Les Refuges Periurbans). The architects have combined the beauty of art with the serenity of nature by creating fascinating structures shaped like owls that live in the banks of the river Garonne in Bordeaux. The goal is to show the wilderness and get people out hiking in the mountainous areas of Bordeaux. Mixing wilderness and suburban areas brings more people the joys of the outdoors. Even though the Owls are situated along the river Garonne’s stunning wilderness, they are only 100 meters from the biggest mall in the city. The best part about these uniquely shaped cabins – they’re completely free.
Visitors can stay in the owl cabins for free for one night, as long as they reserve in advance on the website here. The project was initiated by Bruit du Frigo, an art and architecture studio based in Bordeaux, who worked in conjunction with Zebra3, which is a contemporary art studio, for Bordeaux Metropole, to bring this to life.
The cabins come with just the bare necessities, which means you will have access to a bed. Electricity, heat and running water are not available, however for a night under the stars, you shouldn’t need it.
Aside from the owls along the river Garonne there is a stained glass lakeside geometric wonder in nearby Ambares-et-Lagrave that is called ‘The Prism‘. There is another building known as ‘The Beautiful Star’ that has five sleeping chambers, and is known for its bright yellow star shaped figure.
So kick back, relax and enjoy fine wine country without the expensive hotel bill.
