For Reassign, Claudia Gonzales documents the complex journey travelled by transgendered people living in Cuba. In the first photo you will see the phase preceding the gender reassignment process, and in the other, following the surgery. These photos are made to reaffirm the identities that have so often been denied throughout Cuba’s turbulent history.
Since the 1960s transgender people have been regularly denied jobs and many turn to prostitution and drug use to make up for a lack of sustainable work and resources.
Although the last decade has brought a number of human rights triumphs for LGBT citizens, including healthcare, counseling and legally recognized name and gender changes, many are still discriminated against in daily life. Much reform is still needed. These photos finally give a voice to the transgendered people of Cuba.
