Would you be willing to give up technology, labels and social media to minimize your impact on the earth?
French photographer, Eric Valli has had great commercial success, but this set of photographs is far from the norm. This unique series titled Off the Grid documents the lives of Americans who have left civilization for a new life in the wilderness, immersing themselves in the land and forgotten ways of our ancestors.

This project has taken Valli to some of the most remote locations in the world. He spent several years with four different groups from communities in North America who made the choice to disconnect from technology and consumerism. Each group is living at a different point of societal separation.

Valli writes that, “There are a growing number of people who have decided to live light on the earth to not be a part of the problem anymore.” He published a book about his experience in the wild called Rencontres hors du temps.
Although some may deem this to be regressive or reclusive, this one-of-a-kind lifestyle could actually be a step forward in environmental consciousness. Valli allows us to peer into the idea of a lighter life, leaving the weight of civilization behind.
