What Actually Drives CCTV Pricing Up or Down
Every site is different, so no two quotes look identical. In my experience, these are the main factors that move the price:
- Labor and cable runs. If the pathway to get a cable from camera to recorder is straightforward, it’s quick. If we’re running cable through a difficult roof space, under a house, or through solid walls, that takes more time — and time is the biggest cost driver in this trade.
- Surface mounting and back boxes. Some cameras need to be surface mounted with a back box, which is the housing that protects and holds the connection between the cable and the camera. Adding these adds cost.
- Distance to the job. Travel time to rural properties or sites further out from Napier and Hastings gets factored into the quote.

It means one cable does everything, rather than a power cable to a camera that still has patchy wireless video.
I’ve had plenty of clients who tried a wireless system, sometimes requiring an electrician just to get a power cable run to the camera, and it ended up costing more than a proper PoE install would have in the first place — with a less reliable result. We get a steady stream of customers upgrading away from cheap wireless cameras because of exactly this: inconsistency, dropouts, and the inconvenience of batteries. Cheaper cameras generally mean less reliability, full stop.
