Living on your own in a large city can be loud, crowded, and most of all, expensive. Most of us can barely afford our rent, our bank balances mocking us whenever we make a withdrawal. But if you’ve got $1.91 in your bank account, then consider yourself lucky, because that’s all you need to purchase your very own farm on the North Coast of Wales.
Parc Farm, located in the Great Orme—a limestone headland in Wales—is looking for farmers. About half of the land is used as farmland, mostly for sheep grazing, which means that you’ll be cohabiting with 416 sheep, all of which you’ll be responsible for herding and shearing.
The 145-acre piece of land is home to many rare and endangered plants and animals. According to Notable, the Welsh Cotoneaster and the silver-studded blue butterfly do not exist anywhere else in the world. However, because the land has not been grazed or cared for properly over the last decade, much of the wildlife that call the area home could disappear forever.
“Unless we follow a very specific grazing regime, we will not see these most fragile habitats recover,” said William Greenwood, the Great Orme general manager on the website. “We’re looking for a tenant who sees a productive farm as one which produces conservation benefit as well as good healthy food.”
The selected applicant will pay less than $2 a year to live on the land. Greenwood adds: “To give him, or her, a head-start, and the best chance of success, we’re taking away the financial pressure of having to cover the rent for the farm, grazing rights and farmhouse each year.”
The final day to submit an application is June 10, and the successful applicant will be chosen by the end of September.
The job is perfect for anyone with a passion and skill in wildlife conservation and working with animals. The Great Orme’s scenic landscapes are incredibly diverse—from grassland to woodland to rolling hills and sea cliffs—and are rich with wildlife and history.
