Mark Bustos, a professional hairdresser from New York, found a way to incorporate his passion into helping the homeless. His usual cuts run for around $150 at work, but on Sundays Mark walks the streets and gives the homeless complimentary cuts. The idea is to give those down on their luck a feeling of confidence that could encourage a new start.

Kenny, over 50. I asked Kenny how old he is, he smiled and said, “After 50, you don’t keep count anymore.” Kenny and James told me they are brothers. I said, “blood brothers?” They said, “Brothers from another mother.” They have known each other for over 20 years and look out after one another. Kenny was walking with a limp and told me he had recently spent a significant amount of time in the hospital because he had surgery on his foot. While I was cutting his hair, @babyl_a_l_a left to buy them some lunch and @jayisip1 left to buy them matching Coogi sweaters and matching winter coats.(yes…COOGI sweaters ) .. With tears rolling down his face, Kenny said, “I was just telling James this morning how badly I needed a haircut and wished for a miracle like this to happen.” #BeAwesomeToSomebody @devinthedinoe
Mark seems to realize that helping the homeless is not just about putting a pocketful of change in their hands, it’s about understanding that the potential for change is in your hands. That’s why he created the hashtag #beawesometosomebody on social media as a platform for people to post photos of them doing a random act of kindness.

As Mark puts it, “Anybody can do anything with the gifts that they’re given.” So give your talents to the world selflessly. After all, generosity is contagious.
